COVID-19’s Impact on Long-Term Care

The COVID-19 pandemic has created enormous pressure on the entire health care system, but possibly the most tragic impact has been on the long-term care system for both younger and older people in residential care programs. The impact is especially felt in nursing homes, where over 85% of the residents are among the most vulnerable part of the population: older people. After only a few weeks, several thousand nursing home residents have succumbed to the virus across the country. Unfortunately, this is likely an under-count, as information on infection and mortality rates is suspect in the absence of standardized reporting requirements at the national level and insufficient capacity to test residents for infection in many facilities.

This site will include links to articles, reports, and other information on trends in nursing homes and assisted living facilities as it becomes available. Furthermore, we will include commentaries on the implications of these terrible events for the future of long-term care, especially residential care programs, in the United States as the nation struggles with the impact of the pandemic, and the unprecedented growth of the older population over the next few decades.
